Friday, September 13th - Day 3 Westport
Friday dawned overcast and there were a few very light drizzly patches. While Deb got going Munroe took a short walk to one of the nearby castle ruins, finding some very sweet blackberries along the roadside hedges. Deb straightened out her cell-phone situation by enrolling in the same 'ultimate' plan that Munroe has, giving her access to unlimited calls, texts and data while in any of about 200 countries around the world, and unlimited calls back to the US from virtually anywhere. That was time well spent.
Around mid-afternoon we took the short - 15km or so - drive to Westport, reputedly the prettiest town in County Mayo. It lived up to this billing - a lovely old town on the banks of a nice river and a separate port area about a mile from the town center. We enjoyed strolling around and Deb found a lovely woven wool zippered sweater (in green, of course!) made in the nearby Island of Achill. It was cold! We have been surprised at how cool it is here - temps in the 50s and 60s during the day, and cooler at night. So we needed to re-provision with a warmer garment! She also got some post-cards and stamps to send back to the US.
We drove out to the port area - but by this time the drizzle had turned to a light rain so we didn't explore that too much. Instead, we retreated to McGing's Pub in downtown Westport - the oldest in the town - and had a pint of Smithwicks while Deb wrote out the post cards.
