Wednesday, September 18th - Day 8 Arrive in Nice, France and drive to house in Eze

FRANCE

EZE

We made it to the Dublin airport in good time - arriving around 8:30 after filling up the rental's gas tank,  Flying business class, we were the first to be checked in and were wisked through security on a special program that is roughly the equivalent of our TSA Pre-check that we enjoy so at home.  We had an easy flight from Dublin to Nice via Amsterdam on KLM.  We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and drink served on both legs of the trip - KLM does a nice job making you feel comfortable and appreciated. We picked up our rental car and drove an hour to our AirBnb house in Eze - halfway up the "corniche" on the border with Monaco.

The coast of the Cote D-Azur is basically mountainous.  There is a narrow strip right on the water then hills, or "Corniche"  rise sharply above.  \The roads are perched along the corniche.  The views are spectacular but the heights are a bit scary in places.

Driving up the final leg of the drive in the dark on a one-lane road, with stone walls and houses on each side, was a bit hair-raising!  Arriving at what at first seemed like an unpromising destination, we met our host "Georges" who lives with his wife Franka below us.  He gave us instructions on how to turn on the heat - very cold - and how to operate some of the very old appliances!  He told us that the temperature had dropped about 5-6 Celcius with the rains that had hit earlier in the day.

The house has a beautiful marble terrace that looks out to the Mediterranean, with Cap Ferret just in view in the corner.  This is definitely the highlight of the place - plus the peace & quiet.  Georges asked us to keep the driveway gate closed when out - there are apparently wild boar in the area and they make a real mess if they can get into your garden!

We unpacked quickly and headed straight to bed as there was no food in the place and we hadn't stopped to get supplies.  Fortunately, we'd been well-fed on the flight from Amsterdam so we weren't too hungry.
